The New Fourth Army Enters Lishui

What happened

According to the Party History Channel of People's Daily Online, the New Fourth Army advanced from southern Anhui into southern Jiangsu in May 1938 and reached Lishui. Lixiang then served in turn as the regimental headquarters of the 1st Regiment of the 1st Detachment and the 4th Regiment of the 2nd Detachment, and later of the 46th Regiment.

Units stationed at Lixiang

The 1st Regiment of the 1st Detachment, the 4th Regiment of the 2nd Detachment and the 46th Regiment each had their headquarters at Lixiang at different times. Unit designations follow the wording of the source and are neither simplified nor rewritten. The sources give neither the dates on which each regiment arrived and left, nor the buildings it used, nor what it did there.

Relation to later events

After the Tangma Battle of November 1941 the leading party, government and military organs of southern Jiangsu and the main body of the New Fourth Army moved to Lixiang and its neighbourhood, and Lixiang passed from a regimental station to the seat of those organs.

Uncertainties

The sources give only one date, that the army reached Lishui in May 1938; they do not give the dates on which individual regiments moved into Lixiang. Reaching Lishui and moving into Lixiang were not the same day's work, and this entry does not merge the two.
