Lixiang Revolutionary Site

Headquarters of the Party, government and military in southern Jiangsu during the War of Resistance

Lixiang, in Shitouzhai Village, Baima Town, Lishui District, was the seat of New Fourth Army units and of the CPC Jiangsu-Anhui Regional Committee, the Southern Jiangsu Administrative Office and the 16th Brigade of the New Fourth Army's 6th Division during the War of Resistance, and is today a revolutionary memorial site.

Location

Lixiang is a hamlet in Shitouzhai Village, Baima Town, Lishui District; the district government refers to the place as "Shitouzhai community, Baima Town, Lishui". It stands in the Huifeng Mountain area, and during the War of Resistance its position where southern and central Jiangsu meet made it a base for units and offices.

How the site came to be used

In May 1938 the New Fourth Army moved north from southern Anhui into southern Jiangsu and reached Lishui. Lixiang became the headquarters, in turn, of the 1st Regiment of the 1st Detachment and the 4th Regiment of the 2nd Detachment, and later of the 46th Regiment. After the Tangma Battle of November 1941, the Party, government and military leadership of southern Jiangsu and the main force of the New Fourth Army moved to Lixiang and the surrounding area, and Lixiang turned from a regimental base into the command centre for the region.

Offices and units stationed here

According to the district government and to the Party history channel of People's Daily, the bodies stationed in the Lixiang area during the war included the CPC Jiangsu-Anhui Regional Committee, the Southern Jiangsu Administrative Office and the 16th Brigade of the New Fourth Army's 6th Division. The district government calls the place the "command centre of the War of Resistance in southern Jiangsu" and notes that historians have called it "the Little Yan'an of southern Jiangsu"; that phrase is a description used by historians, and this entry marks it as reported speech rather than adopting it as the site's own assessment.

People associated with Lixiang

Chen Yi, together with New Fourth Army commanders such as Jiang Weiqing and Zhong Guochu, directed operations from here and issued important measures including the Administrative Programme for Southern Jiangsu. This entry records only the association between people and place and the activities that can be documented; biographies belong to the biographical section and are not set out here.

Present state

Lixiang is a National Key Rural Tourism Village. The site's own sources do not give a full account of the conservation and restoration of the old buildings or of the exhibition facilities, and this will be added when a dedicated source is available. The entry does not list individual buildings or protection grades, because no source held here establishes Lixiang itself as a protected cultural relic site.
