Huifeng Mountain Counter-Diehard Campaign Site

Huifeng Mountain stands in Baima Town, Lishui District. In the fifth batch of municipal protected sites published by the Nanjing Municipal People's Government, the site is recorded as "Huifeng Mountain Counter-Diehard Campaign Site, Republican period, Huifeng Mountain, Baima Town, Lishui District". The list gives only the level, the period and the location, and not the year of publication, so this entry records the listing as "fifth batch, year unverified".

Its relation to the campaign

The site is the battlefield of the Huifeng Mountain–Beijingxiang action of the Southern Jiangsu Counter-Diehard Campaign in April 1943. The campaign ran from 12 to 15 April and comprised six actions; Huifeng Mountain and Beijingxiang is the one that concerns Lishui, the others lying mostly in what is now Liyang and Gaochun, since the campaign was fought across county boundaries.

The units engaged

According to the reading of the inscription published by the Administration of the Yuhuatai Martyrs' Cemetery in Nanjing, the western line consisted of three battalions of the Ninth Branch School of the Anti-Japanese Military and Political University and the 1st Battalion of the 47th Regiment, resisting the Kuomintang diehard forces; the eastern line consisted of the 48th and 46th Regiments of the 16th Brigade, the brigade's security battalion and the 2nd Battalion of the 51st Regiment, meeting five regiments of the diehard Advance Army and Loyal Patriotic Army. The area of operations took in Huifeng Mountain, Guan Mountain, Cao Mountain and Beijingxiang.

Commemorative structures

A monument to those killed in the campaign stands on Huifeng Mountain, and the reading of its inscription is published by the Administration of the Yuhuatai Martyrs' Cemetery. In its 2025 reply to a CPPCC proposal, the district bureau of culture and tourism names instead a "memorial pagoda to those killed in the Southern Jiangsu Counter-Diehard Campaign" and says it has been put forward for provincial revolutionary-relic status. The two names differ, and the material available does not establish whether they are the same structure, so both are recorded side by side. An application is not a listing, and this entry records no protection level for the structure.

What the date refers to

The date given here is that of the campaign, April 1943. It is not the year the site was listed, nor the year the monument was erected; the list records the site's period only as "Republican". The list says nothing about the kind or extent of the remains that survive.

Note on terms

The term rendered here as "diehard" is the contemporary and Party-history usage for the Kuomintang forces that the New Fourth Army counter-attacked in this campaign. It is reproduced as it appears in the sources and carries no assessment of its own.
