On 20 April 1949 the People's Liberation Army began the Yangtze crossing; on the 25th Lishui was organised as a district under the Zhenjiang Prefecture of the Southern Jiangsu Administrative Office. The sources give neither the exact date of Lishui's liberation nor the units involved.

The Yangtze crossing

According to the Jiangsu Party History Documents Network's overview of the liberation of Jiangsu, the People's Liberation Army began the Yangtze crossing at 20:00 on 20 April 1949; at four in the afternoon that day the 35th Army of the 8th Corps opened the Sanpu campaign for Puzhen, Pukou and Jiangpu. That source covers the Nanjing direction only and gives neither the units nor the operations on the Lishui direction.

The district system

According to the district government's account of Lishui's history, on 25 April 1949 Lishui was organised as a district under the Zhenjiang Prefecture of the Southern Jiangsu Administrative Office. In March 1983 Lishui County was transferred from Zhenjiang back to Nanjing.

Gaps in the record

The sources available to this site give neither the exact date of Lishui's liberation nor the units involved. This entry therefore records only the two facts that can be checked: that the crossing began on 20 April, and that Lishui was organised as a district on 25 April. The takeover in between is not inferred, and the exact date remains to be verified.

Uncertainties

"Organised as a district" is the administrative wording of the time. How it relates to the later restoration of county government is not explained by the sources and is not filled in here.
